On Our Heritage Children are our gift to a future that we may not live to fully see. The hope of the future of the Church is carried in its children. Their understanding of the grander story of Adventism will influence their experience of Adventism today, and shape the future that they create for this Church. Today's children are, however, influenced by many pressures to forget the past. There is evidence that they are somewhat disconnected from the master stories of Adventism's journey. With no shared images, they are left with little to guide or inspire their appreciation for, and perspectives of, the mission of the Adventist Church. Lesser stories often take center stage in life, leading to loss of meaning and direction. Adventist congregations and schools are places of memory. They attempt in various ways, and with degrees of success, to keep alive the bedrock values of Adventism. In Sabbath School classes, youth meetings, Pathfinder programs, school classrooms and special events, they mediate the master stories of Adventism. They are stories of commitment, sacrifice, and faith that need to be told to, and heard by, emerging generations. |
