On Relevance The world changes; the Word doesn't. The Church needs to be timeless and timely at the same time. It needs to be simultaneously faithful to the content of Scripture and to the context of ministry. A missional church is always outward looking, always changing (as culture continues to change), and always faithful to the Word of God. It sees itself as being able to interact meaningfully with culture without ever being beguiled by it. The way the Church stays relevant is by anchoring itself on Jesus, its Head, and on His unchanging truths and eternal purposes while being willing to continually adapt how it communicates these truths and perspectives. Relevance is not about conformity; it is about clarity and connectedness. Relevance is not about having everyone agree with you. It is about speaking the truth of Christ honestly and credibly into a person's life. "For though I am not man's slave, yet I have made myself everyone's slave, that I might win more men to Christ. . . I do all this for the sake of the gospel," the Apostle Paul, in I Corinthians 9:19-23. |
