On Mission The Church is an organic community that is on a mission. Its mission was defined for it by its Founder. There are two dominant elements in the Church's mission, as given to it by Jesus. One, often referred to as the Great Commission sends the Church on a mission of making disciples of Jesus. The other, perhaps best referred to as the Great Omission of the Church, is described in Matthew 25, and presents faithfulness to God as evidenced in acts of social and humanitarian compassion. This latter aspect of the Church's mission is in perfect harmony with what Jesus Himself declared as His mission: "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free." (Luke 4:18-19). This is also consistent with the dominant theme of the appeal of the Hebrew prophets for justice, mercy, compassion, hope, and healing. |
